In addition to my experience as a translator for over 15 years, I also have the advantage of extra insight into the nuances of both languages. Having one Japanese and one British parent, I spent most of my formative years in Japan, learning Japanese as my mother tongue. My formal education took place partly in England and also in American international schools in Japan and Korea. This naturally led me into the world of translating for a living. As an interpreter and translator, I have worked in Japan, Malaysia, Taiwan, Canada and the United Kingdom. This international exposure has given me a unique cultural sensitivity in whichever language I am using.
English is a versatile language; Japanese a subtle one. I have an in-depth understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of both, which is the great advantage that I bring to each piece of translation. This kind of sensitivity cannot be learned through formal education, nor through learning a language as an adult.
During my career as a translator, I have also taken time to study and develop other interests. I am a qualified arboriculturalist and wind turbine technician. This reflects my commitment to caring for nature and protecting our environment, personal values that I aim to see reflected in my professional life as I work towards specialising in translation for the renewable energy sector. |
