restricted jobs answer Feb 12, 2018

Dear Angel,

Some outsources prefer to restrict the job post to paying members only, as they have been "verified" so to speak by Proz.com. Thus, the outsourcer feels a bit more confident in selecting a trustworthy translator rather than an unknown non-paying member.

I was a non-paying member for a long time and unfortunately didn't get any job assignments. Even though non-paying members are allowed to quote after 12 hours, by that time the job would have been allocated.

Once I became a paying member, I saw the increase of the jobs available to me and I am getting work, too.

I hope this information helps.

The default is to restrict the job to paying members for 12 hours. I've never noticed a job that's been changed to restrict it for 24 hours but that's another option. The other two are to only allow paying members to quote and dispense with restrictions from the outset.

I don't know how many registered users there are on this site, but bear in mind that it's by far the largest and truly international. I do know that there are very many paying members. I imagine they will provide a more than adequate pool for most outsourcers to choose from, most of the time.

Of course it doesn't, but it offers far more opportunities to make use of the site features (visibility in searches, access to restriced job offers, etc.)

on the ProZ.com site - job board, Blue Board, etc - payment should give translators one hell of an advantage. Otherwise, what's the point in paying?

There's nothing to stop any professional translator paying and getting the same advantages (or any "hobby" translator, for that matter). Any professional who can't afford a measly €100 or so a year is clearly doing something wrong. The ROI of simply paying can be borderline in the commonest pairs - after all, you'd still be a small fish in a huge pond - but the ROI of paying AND getting to the top of the directory list for your specialisations AND giving clients who find you here all the right messages as to your worth can be enormous. Check out the Site Guidance Centre for more information on that.

No, it certainly doesn't. I was a paying member for a number of years, until something under a year ago.

I have my own reasons why I am no longer a paying member. And it's not about affording a measly €100 or so a year or not.

I don't think anyone claimed that payment would enhance skills.

But you are complaining about not having access to the features that come with paid membership. Instant access to job postings is a fee-based privilege. If that's important to you, then you will need to pay.

It's a commercial undertaking, not a charity.

If you're taking umbrage, Bernhard, please don't. I quite clearly said "professional who can't afford". If you choose to spend your money on something else, that's your affair and my comment didn't refer to you.

It is not about 100 Euro it is about ethics and much more Feb 13, 2018

Sheila Wilson wrote:

Dear Sheila,

This whole thing is not about €100. First of all it is an ethical question and second it is about billions of $ or € (not per person but as a whole) that we cannot earn because we are hindered.
Job board jobs (known as low end in the industry) are at least tripled.
At the same time juicy direct job emails sent via proz may not be received by us due to some weird circumstances...
Login sessions differ depending which page you are opening and as you have probably heard login sessions will be counted in the new directory's ranking. So it can be manipulated. Directories are shown differently depending on who opens the site or maybe where it is opened. I made print screen of that. People have login problems: for me it was in June when the site made me logged out more times and couldn't log back. Others experience it now, some members were not able to log back in. My availability was changed to red as non-available in the Manage apps page meanwhile I didn't set my availability. You can say it's my pc, but what about others who are experiencing the same? Then weird visitors appeared in many members' visitor tabs. Some of us received an advert to pay for Plus membership to have a better visitor tab. When I mentioned that I (and some other translators) don't receive direct jobs any more I was told to subscribe for Plus membership again. Profile parts where you can write about yourself are set that way (in code view) that when you write there any links or emails will get a nofollow code, which is intended to reduce the effectiveness of certain types of internet advertising. And others (people or maybe non-people) from the site staff can accidentally log in to our profiles and can write on behalf of us.

I think the truth is stranger than fiction.

Bests,
Katalin

Clouding the issue Feb 13, 2018

I know from other posts that you're having some sort of problem with using ProZ.com. But posting this here is really clouding the issue. I believe your problems are being investigated by staff and comments on them belong elsewhere on the site.

The original post was simply about some jobs being restricted so that registered users (i.e. those who don't pay) can't see them. There's absolutely no ethical issue with that. It's a straightforward question of commerce, just as you can't expect to be handed a pint of beer for free in a bar. You might get a small sample to taste if you're lucky, though . Free users here get to see the directories and can eventually reply to some job posts. Their profiles are also visible to outsourcers and come up in searches.
