Thank you for the warning! Jan 25, 2010

I received the same type of messages from PADENA TRANS in California. Fortunately I decided to research the company before sending them any money. It must be a profitable scam because they seem to have been in business for quite some time.

PADENA TRANSLATIONS SCAM EMAIL Feb 24, 2010

They are at it AGAIN... as of February 24, 2010 this scam is still active! Email received today is below. I was unaware of where the phone numbers originate. The vagueness does not help either. I did an engine search and first hit was this ProZ forum that confirmed my suspicions (where I am currently posting it). Ugh! Here is the email:

If you receive this e-mail, warn the other e-mail recipients Feb 25, 2010

Clear scam!

As a courtesy, I warned all other e-mail addresses in the recipient field with a link to this thread.

If Padena contacts you, consider doing the same.

I was selected for the old PADENA scam today... Feb 25, 2010

... and I wrote him bccing the other translators (see below.)
You know, Steve and I are old friends. He thinks of me every once in a while.
This guy has sent me the same e-mail several times already, and has always received the same answer. Apparently, he never gives up. Neither do I.
I have also reported this scam to the ATA. Yet again. Sigh.

Looks like he is working the ES-EN combination this week Mar 2, 2010

I got the same sloppily worded message yesterday.

I usually ignore messages offering work that do not use my name and give next to no contact information.

This time, I figured I might respond. First, I checked the Blue Board - nothing. Then I googled Padena Translations and, golly, I found this thread.

Hey "Steve", I know you are reading this thread. Don't let us find out who you are.

Translation Scams Mar 10, 2010

It's odd how some crooks target translators with stuff like this. It appears as though many of some of these crooks know a bit more about T&I than the common man. Some of them have either dabbled in translation or maybe are translators (although certainly not native speakers of English).

It's odd how some crooks target translators with stuff like this. It appears as though many of some of these crooks know a bit more about T&I than the common man. Some of them have either dabbled in translation or maybe are translators (although certainly not native speakers of English).

I remember the first scam I was ever approached with about 6 years ago. A guy said he wanted a Swedish interpreter for a week for his three daughters in Minneapolis. He said that I should take them out shopping and show them around. I jumped at it, of course. Hanging out with three 20-something Swedish girls sounded like a pretty good gig. Maybe a little too good... I wrote the guy back and said I was interested and he wanted to prepay. I wrote him back saying that wasn't necessary and he wrote back again insisting on prepaying. I wrote to him back in Swedish (since I figured he was) and asked him some basic details about who he was and what he wanted precisely and he wrote again in English asking me how he could pay me up front. I thought that was really strange and had sort of lost interest in the job since the guy was coming off as kind of a flake. So I decided to mess around with him a little. I wrote back in Swedish with some lewd suggestions and he just replied in English again asking for payment details. My last email was in English and wasn't pretty and that was the last I head from him.

I received other scams later on, but after that I was on my guard and the offers seemed more far-fetched. Like a priest from Ghana whose wife only spoke Icelandic and some local tribal language. Yeah, right. But the first one nearly got me. Minneapolis has a deep connection with Sweden, and with the Mall of America why not bring your family along for a week of Christmas shopping in early December. It was all feasible and sort of flowed except for the fact that not many 20 year-olds from Sweden would need an escort interpreter unless they came from some ridiculously hickish place. The level of English there is quite high. And then the fact that the alleged father didn't flinch when I wrote a few things that should have made him freak.

Translators you think should be more worldly and more immune to this type of nonsense, but it must have worked here and there or they wouldn't have kept it going. In the beginning ATA members seemed to be the people targeted. Now the ATA hides contact info.
