I was inclined to go with snows or somesuch, although "combustible" did not seem to fit. Then I came across this regarding your prominent person:

As he is referring to underground wealth and resources, some kind of general term would probably be best, which is why I chose hydrocarbons. He was probably referring to gas deposits. Oil would never be described as "white" and the other uses of combustible blanco we have found refer to products once they have been refined.

| I think this is it. But in the context, which is a letter by Moreno to the Min. of Agriculture, it seems odd to say hydrocarbons, no? I suppose just 'fuel' would work. I just realized that 3 sentences before this one it mentions petroleo y carbon in the US. I also found naphtha as a possible translation of combustible blanco, but I don't think that's right either. |
