German term

Frauenambulanz

German to English Medical Psychology
Information sheet for parents of stillborn children.

The Frauenambulanz is not a gynaecological dept. but rather offers psychological help to women with problems/in difficult situations (see link). Stuck on a "non-wordy" equivalent in English. Grateful for suggestions.

Discussion

milinad Oct 14, 2010:
Oultpatient Since the term 'ambulanz' is used in the German text any suggestion given should have term 'outpatient' as opposed to 'inpatient' treatment e.g. 'women's outpatient clinic' the speciality can be anything in the case here 'psychology'
Susan Welsh Oct 13, 2010:
Shelter? As far as I know, such shelters do not offer professional psychotherapeutic services. They are places (like homes) where women go to find "shelter"--to get away from abusive spouses, to have a roof over their head, support in finding a job and child care if they need to. I think of them as part of the social worker support apparatus, not psychiatric. Probably they refer to therapists, but I doubt if they are run by therapists, as the Asker's link describes.
David Partikian Oct 13, 2010:
Women's Shelter In the US, these shelters provide help and psychological support to battered women. T\his is an accepted term and in a thesaurus used for indexing by Dept. of Veterans Affairs.

Women's Service

Just one possible idea (Women's Clinic sounds like a purely gynaecological thing)
Peer comment(s):

agree seehand : or perhaps women's counselling service?

women's trauma unit

This is what I would call it, but perhaps it doesn't qualify for a "non-wordy" equivalent. I agree with Armorel's suggestion, as long as there is sufficient context. Otherwise, "women's service" could be interpreted rather broadly.

women's therapy clinic

I think you need to convey somehow that it is for mental health, not GYN, social center, or place for babysitting services and a gym, etc. In AE, at least, people go to great length to avoid the words "mental health." They use euphemisms like "wellness" or "behavioral clinic." But I think therapy is clearest and not so silly as those.

Counselling Service for women

I see that this is a "niederschwelliges Angebot" für "wenig motivierte Patientinnen" so it must sound as harmless and friendly as possible, while being obviously something professional.
Thus I suggest calling it a counselling service.

Women's Service and Care Centre are too vague, and calling it a Trauma Unit or a Clinic sounds too medicinal (especially for those who think of trauma=breakage).
