Modern Popes have issued specific writings on contemporary topics from time to time during their reigns - what is the specific name given to these writings?

encyclicas

Encyclicas is the name given by Popes to all official documents in many matters (Last one, from Benedicto XVI, was CARITAS IN VERITATIS)

Papal bulls were originally issued by the pope for many kinds of communication of a public nature, but after the 15th century, only for the more formal or solemn of occasions. Modern scholars have retroactively used the term "bull" to describe any elaborate papal document issued in the form of a decree or privilege (solemn or simple), and to some less elaborate ones issued in the form of a letter. Popularly, the name is used for any papal document that contains a metal seal.

Papal encyclical is a letter sent by the Pope to Roman Catholic bishops of a particular area or the world, usually treating some aspect of Catholic doctrine. Papal encyclicals usually take the form of a Papal brief due to their more personal nature as opposed to the formal Papal bull.

Thanks Teresa
disagree Joss Heywood : It's a pity that the automatic peer system in this case chose a word that is neither English nor Spanish! I really don't mind which word is chosen, as long as it's English - this was not "collaboration" - this is an automatic Proz system that fails.

Poor you, Joss. Would you like me to give you 4 points? It´s just a matter of collaboration, dear

I'm not sure which you are referring to, so I'm posting this just in case

encyclical letter

"Specific writings on contemporary topics" would be a description of encyclical letters. Bulls are now more like decrees establishing official acts, etc. "...during the last three pontificates the most important utterances of the Holy See have been given to the world in the shape of encyclicals."http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/05413a.htm Catholic Encyclopedia

A papal bull is an official document issued by the Pope or his offices. Papal bulls can cover a wide range of situations, from excommunications to canonizations of Catholic saints. The Vatican Archives hold many historical examples of papal bulls, and their contents have been reprinted and published all over the world. Since many followers of the Christian faith view the Pope as an important figure in their church, papal bulls are often widely discussed when they are issued.

"The papacy has been issuing documents for centuries, and these documents have been referred to with a wide assortment of terms, depending on the era and their contents. By the sixth century, Popes were certainly issuing formal documents such as charters, decrees, and patents which have been retroactively called “papal bulls,” even though this term did not enter common use until the 13th century."

apostolic letter, apostolic constitution, bull or encyclical

All these are papal writings. They have different meanings. You can Wiki them all, or find a more official source.
