Spanish term

se hace pasar

Spanish to English Science Transport / Transportation / Shipping Liquid Chromotography
SPAIN. My scant knowledge of the process being described and the many and varied uses of "pasar" are preventing me finding the right words to express what seems a pretty basic and commonplace expression: "(se hace) pasar". So far all I can think of is "is applied"...

"La cromatografía es, esencialmente, un método físico de separación, en el cual los componentes a separar se distribuyen en dos fases: la fase estacionaria, de gran área superficial y la fase móvil que ***se hace pasar*** continuamente a lo largo de la fase estacionaria.

Plus a gadzillion other hits on Google
In any case, I'd use the word flow rather than "pass"
Neil Ashby May 13, 2015:
John, "stream" doesn't tend to be used in chromatography, not as far as I know. My suggestion changes to an active construction ;@)
John Cutler May 13, 2015:
I think the term has to do with the stream. I don't have time to research it but you might want to Google: Chromatography+flow or Chromatography+stream and change it from a passive to an active construction.

Sorry I don't know how "Transport / Transportation / Shipping /" got into the heading there... excuse my laxity.

runs continuously

the mobile phase runs continuously through the stationary phase,

I'd put it like, changing the subject to the mobile phase (which is moving of its own accord, we're not making it move). It also ties in well with "run time".

Donal's answer also works perfectly well.

Neil, can you confirm it's HPLC and TLC?

**** can you confirm it's HPLC and NOT TLC?
Note from asker:
Yes, HPLC. Apparently HP = High Performance but used to be High Pressure. My Spanish original text calls it "alta presión"...

it deceives

Usually se hace pasar is used to express when somebody or something is deceiving the perception and looking as something different from what it really is.

A bit more of context in the sentece could be helpful but I would say this is the term you are looking for.
Peer comment(s):

disagree philgoddard : I don't know how you justify a 5 for an answer that makes no sense.
