Rant I'm pretty sure whoever uses the word "оснастка" doesn't know what it means precisely; it comes from the maritime industry where it would generally mean rigging, but today, it doesn't have to mean rigging; if you have a process that uses some equipment, it will also have "оснастка" to that equiment, which is supposed to mean tooling items or accessories, but what complicates things is that besides "оснастка" you'll have "(вспомогательные) приспособления," which also mean accessories, and I'm certain you can't translate it as "tooling" in all instances. I can find a way to translate "оснастка" in a given context, but I can't translate it in general. I believe a lot of engineers who use this word are simply fond of it and use it so the text would sound more professional. I used the word "hardware" (with some extras) in a recent project; don't know if a general formula could look like "process-support hardware." "Fittings" and "fixtures" are two words our translators often use for things they don't really know how to translate, but both words have definitions that are quite specific, too specific for denoting vague things like "оснастка" (English is way more functional than Russian)
