English term

trailing edge vs. phase delay vs. reverse phase

English Tech/Engineering Electronics / Elect Eng
I am doing a translation concerning dimmers and in particular: "real-time illumination stability systems for trailing edge dimmers"

I "roughly" know what a trailing edge is (the second part of the pulse wave after the zero crossing?) and I also have an "established" Italian translation for this, but it seems that this translation is not used or not applicable to dimmers, so I was wondering if "trailing edge" could share the same concept as phase delay or reverse phase, as this would allow me to use an Italian terminology which is established for dimmers.
Hope I made myself clear, anyway my question is, is there any difference between these three expressions?

thanks!

PS - I am asking this here (EN-EN) as in the EN-IT section this was already discussed and with results not applicable to my case and also because I know many of you have a very good knowledge of the subject matter :-)

A leading-dege dimmer operates by switching on the ac waveform sometime after the start of the half-wave, while a trailing-edge dimmer operates by switching off the the ac waveform before the half-wave is completed. Leading-edge and trailing- edge dimmers both use phase delay to determine/adjust where the waveform is 'cut', but the timing is opposite. 'Reverse phase' is apparently a synonym for 'trailing edge control', since leading-edge is the more conventional (and easier) technique.

Dimmability of VS transformers and VS converters
Electromagnetic VS transformers can be controlled using phase-cutting leading-edge dimmers. These dimmers "cut" the sinusoidal mains voltage in the negative and positive half wave at an angle in the ascending portion of this sinusoidal half wave. The higher the angle is set at the dimmer controls, the lower the voltage and hence the lamp´s output.

Electronic VS converters can be controlled using phase-cutting trailing-edge dimmers. In this case, a semiconductor ensures the pre-defined descending portion of the sinusoidal half wave is clipped. VS converters of the LiteLine and TopLine series can be operated with either phase-cutting leading-edge or trailing-edge dimmers. Twin Line converters feature a separate potentiometer connection for adjusting lamp brightness.'

trailing edge vs. phase delay vs. reverse phase

There are differences in the use of the three terms you stated here. The last I think should not be used.I found three contexts that I hope will be of great use for you to decide as I do not have the text to make such a decision. Please check the following:

Trailing Edge

Electrical Engineering:
Edge where the fast flow from the top surface of the blade joins the slower flow from the bottom. Source: European Union.
Energy:
The part of a wind energy conversion device blade, or airfoil, that is the last to contact the wind.
Post & Telecom:
Of a synchronisation pulse:the major portion of the decay time of a pulse. Source/ European Union.

Phase Delay:Trailing Edge
Domain Definition
Electrical Engineering
Edge where the fast flow from the top surface of the blade joins the slower flow from the bottom. Source: European Union.
Energy
The part of a wind energy conversion device blade, or airfoil, that is the last to contact the wind.
Post & Telecom

Phase Delay:
The phase is measured at the START frequency, then automatically tracked and wrapped during the sweep and finally measured at the STOP frequency.THE PHASE DELAY is eventually calculated.( From an article on Vector Network Analizers ZVR)

Software works with normal or reverse phase HPLC:

April 19, 2002 07:44 - Turbo Method Development (TMD) software develops high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) methods, and performs and documents method robustness studies. Built around company's Series 200 Diode Array Detector, TMD runs in concert with TotalChrom(TM) software. It requires no previous knowledge of sample components, has no restriction on analysis time, and can optimize any mobile phase parameter.

I hope those quotes and definitions will be of help to you. That s the best I can do now.
