Discussion

Melzie Nov 30, 2008:
definitions Wild boar is one type of swine, the female of which is called a wild boar sow. The male domestic pig is called a boar or hog depending on your region.

Wild boar are the members of the family that have never been domesticated. Wild or ferral pigs are those that have gone back to the wild.
As the question referrs the the former, it's not a good idea to confuse things with the latter.
David Russi Nov 30, 2008:
I'm ambivalent... the grammatically correct form doesn't sound good.
Gary D Nov 30, 2008:
Funny David, you are having a 50/50 bet. ?
Gary D Nov 30, 2008:
Unless of course it is just a paper on wild Boars, where then it will be
"CSF in wild Boars" plural as there is more than one boar with CSF.
Gary D Nov 30, 2008:
It has to be "CSF in wild pigs," as a boar is a male pig, and CSF is carried by both the boar and the sow
David Russi Nov 30, 2008:
Sounds better? The fact is, it should be plural, for example, "Classical swine fever in wild pig" does not sound good, same with "in wild capuchin monkey", the plural is correct and sounds better.
katarina28 (asker) Nov 30, 2008:
Does it just only sound better or is ther a grammar rule?

O course it should be plural "in wild boars", but it sounds odd, at least to my ears...

Boar is a noun that, besides a regular 's' plural, has a plural form that is identical to the singular form and has a collective meaning. Another example of this is horse.
