I'm not sure what it refers to - I've got a feeling that to issues of taste (western corruption would come in through issues of taste) but I don't know how to take it in...

I believe that the "speaker" wishes to say that this is where he/she considers it interesting to bring up the subject of corruption; it's where it "fits" in the discussion of news reporting.

sounds more like a reference to both intellection and moral corruption, though more context would help
