... and fed a ball into the inside-left channel...
That is the context. I understand it is only used in the UK, so I would very much appreciate it if some football expert could explain it to me.
Thank you kindly.

inside-left attacker's space
Inside-left is an attacker's posiiton in soccer from the old 5-3-2 formation consisting of left wing, inside-left, centre forward, inside-right and right wing
The formation was shaped like a shallow w on the move, with the wings and centre slightly forward of the two insides, who also had feeder as well as attacker roles, depending on the practiced move or the playing situation.

not for points; supplemental info to Dave's answer
Modern formations include, among other things, variations of a 3-5-2 system, whereby the five players are initially stationed as it were in a midfield position. These five, however, are given the freedom to assess any given situation and, where warranted, join in on the attack, effectively making it possible to switch to the much more offensively-inclined 3-3-4 system, for instance. I didn't see the England game in question, but "feeding the ball into the inside left channel" corresponds with my hunch and Dave's explanation of playing a ball into space behind the defenders, making them turn (thereby losing pace vis-a-vis the striker -- very difficult to defend against), so that Rooney could get clear and finish (clinically;-) from the top of the penalty box and burst the twine. HTH. Cheers, R.
Discussion
The England striker doubled the score when O'Shea swapped passes neatly with Louis Saha and fed a ball into the inside-left channel for Rooney to plant in his shot from 18 yards.
I was a bit baffled by the "inside". Now I can picture it perfectly well.
