: they are not panels: they are casings. Dedicated ones. For example,"carter" is used for engin casing.You can't say that the engin just sits amidst protective panels. Same here.

The guards are normally some form of casing. No need to repeat it.

: guards may be just banisters or nettings. Here they are not only "carter" but special ones.So, I think "special casings" is the ticket here.
