Italian term

stentano ad essere riconosciuti come tali dagli stessi ricercatori

Italian to English Science Science (general)
This text is about public understanding os science and the problems that scientists encounter when trying to convey their work.

I don't know whether 'stentano' here mean 'have difficulty' or 'are reluctant to' be 'recognised as being researchers'?
please help!
thanks

Una motivazione importante e' costituita dal fatto che i momenti in cui gli scienziati comunicano stentano ad essere riconosciuti come tali dagli stessi ricercatori.

Hi Lizzy,
this should work

agree Rachel Fell : researchers, maybe?

thanks, Rachel ;-) yes researchers or scientists is better
agree Ford Prefect : ...understood as scientists... is the best solution IMO. When a research scientist is communicating (more often failing to communicate) - irrespective of mode and context, it can be difficult to imagine they are a professional anything.///I'm generalising

thanks, James - btw I happen to know quite a few who've made it their priority to become very effective communicators (it helps funding!)
agree Alfredo Tutino : with rachel, too - I've posted a clarification (I hope!) as a separate answer for the usual reasons of space...

find it hard

I'd say the "have difficulty" option makes more sense simply because I can't imagine any scientist being reluctant to be acknowledged as a scientist by researchers themselves

they are hardly recognised as professionists by researchers themselves

This is another suggestion.

neutral writeaway : professionists?

Linda's answer is good, but your understanding of the phrase might use a little more thinking, IMHO.

The gramatical subject of the sencence is not "i ricercatori", but "i momenti". This might be due to bad Italian writing (loss of control of a convoluted prose), of course, but I think it's a conscious decision of the author.

I think he means that scientist tend to ignore the specific relevance / importance of communication: the instances (the moments) of communication are hardly recognized as such by scientists themselves - i.e. they do not recognize their specific nature of *communication* and tend to treat them casually, without a consistent approach.

In other words, scientists themselves are not aware that communication is a specific activity, different in scope, aim and tecnique from science and research, and have not evolved approaches and strategies to use "i momenti di comunicazione" to good advantage.
