Italian to English Tech/Engineering Telecom(munications) Caller identity verification
"L’identificazione del chiamato mediante chiave semplice segreta è basata sull’invio, da parte del chiamato in fase di identificazione, di un valore MAC ottenuto mediante un algoritmo crittografico applicato al numero casuale PUK di 16 caratteri (3,4E+38 probabilità) generato dal chiamante, e da un oggetto chiave segreta configurata dall’amministratore del servizio"

Let's do some Math. It's a PUK of 16 characters and it is said that it will have a probability of one out of 3,4 * 10 ^ 38 possibilities. So, let's take the 16th-root of this big number that is ( 3,4 * 10 ^ 38 ) ^ (1/16) and we have the number 256 that is an 8-bit number. So, it makes sense. A 16-character key made of 8-bit characters will make 3,4 * 10 ^ 38 different keys. To be exact, (2 ^ 8) ^ 16 = 3.4028236692093846346337460743177e+38 according to my calculator. Colin's translation is correct, in my POV. I would say "probability of one out of 3.4*(10^38)" or, for those that don't like math notation, we could say "one out of 340 quintillion quintillion possibilities". :-)

You can try it for yourself!
3,4e+38 is what you get with the calculator in Windows, for example, if you enter "3,4" "*" "10" "x^y" "38"
Note from asker:
Thanks Colin, I get the maths, but am not sure what this probability actually means in this context
