The reaction was intense.
My response is slightly different from Kanako's in that since we don't know the context, we should use a more neutral adjective as a translation of すごかった, as it can be positive or negative depending on the situation.
For example:
パーティはすごかった。
The party was great.
阪神・淡路大震災はすごかった。
The Great Hanshin Earthquake was terrible.
By using "intense" we can express both positive and negative meaning.
For example:
