Discussion

Lena Watson Mar 19, 2009:
Stolnik vs. table attendant I think that while it's important to preserve the flavour and historical accuracy of the term (stolnik), it's as important to make sure that the reader (particularly if the text is aimed at the general public) understands what it was that a stolnik did. So I'd use Room/Chamber stolnik followed by table attendant to a royalty, etc. in brackets to explain.

Stolnik
The highest general sub-Duma rank of military and court servitors in Muscovy.

Literally meaning "table-attendant," stolnik first appears in 1228 and 1230 for episcopal and princely court officials. As Moscow grew, younger and junior memoirs of the top families and provincial serving elites needed a place at court. Accordingly stolnik lost its earlier meaning and was granted to many members of these strata. Above it was the much smaller number of postelniks (chamberlains), and below a large contingent of striapchis (attendants, servants - a term that appears by 1534), and Moscow dvorianins. The service land reforms of the 1550s and 1590s assigned Moscow province estates to these ranks.

Table attendant to the throne room

See the AIP official list:

I personally think it is better to use 'stolnik', as table attendant is clunky, but 'throne room' is more descriptive than simply writing 'room'

The Personal Secretary

In those times the ranks in Tzar bureaucracy were distributed differently. The highest rank were "Boyars"- serving the Tzar Himself, Tzar family and families of Earls, then were "Okolnichy" (estate manager of Earls and Boyars), then were "stolniks" ( State office managers responsibe for the letters of State) "Diaks" (дьяки) were responsible for secretarial jobs in those offices. Lower down were - Heads of the Military.
English equivalent for the job of "stolnik" a personal secretary. At least it is so in Britain. It is Her Majesty Secretary is responsible for Her letters, Her itenirary, etc
