Russian term

сложносоставной

Russian to English Social Sciences International Org/Dev/Coop
Перевожу с русского на английский:

"...тем более сложная, что в течении значительной части времени социально-политические и экономические преобразования в разных частях огромной и сложносоставной страны шли по-своему."

Я понимаю смысл, но нигде не могу найти подходящий перевод слова "сложносоставной". Думал, "highly variegated" (но слишком касается растений), "heterogeneous" (недостаточно сильное, по моему, и я уже употребил в другом контексте)... Есть идеи?

Спасибо!

Discussion

jellinek (asker) Nov 11, 2009:
Actually, in retrospect, I think heterogeneous might indeed be the best as well, despite the fact that I asked for something else (this was largely because the author of the text I'm translating also used "неоднородный" and similar terms in the preceding sentences, and there are only so many "heterogeneouses" that I can use in a row :-) The only other one that might work here is "multifaceted" since it is the closest term that maintains similar breadth of meaning/ambiguity (some of the others like "multiethnic" are definitely too narrow). But even so, calling a country "multifaceted" is also a bit of a mix of terms.

Anyhow, please go ahead and post it and vote on heterogeneous--I've kept the voting open, and I do think it works well. Apologies for keeping it out in the first place, and thanks for your suggestions!

Поддерживаю heterogeneous:
"a heterogeneous country is very diverse, not similar, like the population of the US. a homogeneous country is not diverse and their population have similar roots, language, etc, for example, Japan is the most homogeneous counties." (http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_is_the_difference_between_a_h...
Judith Hehir, запостите ответ, я тоже проголосую.
Libero_Lang_Lab Nov 11, 2009:
i'll third that none of the other answers posted to date really work in the context, while your's does.
Angela Greenfield Nov 11, 2009:
Judith, I agree... I am thinking the same, too, but the author wants something different. :-(
Put your answer down, I will support it.
Judith Hehir Nov 10, 2009:
Heterogeneous... would be my personal preference.

I think of the ones I've seen so far, 'multifacted' best covers the intended meaning while fitting withing the grammatical structure of the original sentence ("with a complex structure" is a good way to translate the word, but would be extremely "
