натягивать:
A flat cutting instrument, when a small portion of metal has gone from the cutting edge (a notch has appeared), can be repaired by heating it and hammering on its flat side in such a way, that the metal would stretch in the direction of the notch and replace the metal that has gone.
наваривать:
When a larger piece of metal has gone from the edge, it will not be possible to replace it by hammering and flattening the remaining metal and stretching it towards the notch. Then application of more metal will be needed. For this, one need to melt a piece of metal and to melt the cutting edge aroung the notch, and to put the melted edge and melted grop of additional metal together (to weld on some metal). Then different procedures of hardening, tempering, hammering, sharpening and polishing would be needed.
