I would suggest to use "tapeur" if your text is of a literary type somewhere in the middle of the sentence.As a name for this occupation/profession "accompanist" would be more appropriate.

depends on the context
тапер means an accompanying pianist or bayan (accordion) player, and accompanist means a person who plays a musical instrument not limited to piano or bayan. S/he can be a guitarist or a drummer.

: Well, I suppose in dance colleges or acting school a single drummer as an accompnist would be necessary.
