It matters little what you call it Rest assured that unless this is some really targeted academic article no English speaker in his or her right mind will be able to understand what this is about. Even if it IS an academic article, it is still fairly hopeless since they are sure to have their own lingo for that on this side of border.

intransitive reading/perception

I'd probably use the later term, like in the example below:

What Bullough calls aesthetic distance, other philosophers have spoken of as disinterested attention (Stolnitz) or intransitive perception (Vivas), which consists in looking at an object for no reason.

But literal iintransitive reading should work as well (?)

I guess it is supposed to sound sufficiently scientese as the source text is either an undergraduate's thesis or smth of the kind (if one to believe Google ;))
