Russian term

skosorotilisia

Russian to English Art/Literary Poetry & Literature
Novel circa 1900.

Yamshchik skosorotilisia, zaplakal nad pavshei loshadei.

I can't find this anywhere. Does it have any connection to 'kosoi', maybe the driver was trying to hide his tears?

Right, "скосоротился" is from "косой" + "рот", mouth.

It means that he made a disappointed or pained move with his mouth. I do not know how to describe it better, but his lips went aside and down a bit.

I found some wordings in my dictionary which may be helpful:

to screw up one's face /one's features/ — сморщиться, поморщиться, скривиться (see screw up)

he made a wry face — он скривился /скривил лицо/

Also, this twist of the mouth often appears when someone is going to weep, to cry.

And the last note: it\'s not a very usual word. It\'s build on the same model as \"скособочился\" (I found only \"to lean\" in dictionary, but it does not render the full meaning).

I think \"скосоротился\" is coined by the author, but it sounds quite natural and clear for a native Russian.

спасибо :)
agree Vladimir Glushkov : It's a smame that such words could not be found in the dictionaries. All I could find in Толковый Словарь В. Даля is косорылый, косоротый--у кого перекошен рот.

Я выше свое предположение высказал. Не исключено, что это придуманное слово. У нас "почвенники" особенно любят такие вывороченные слова. "Инда взопрели озимыя" и т. п. ;-)

не знаю, не уверен, что это именно то. "Скривиться" можно и от отвращения. :) Спасибо :)
