Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

Non-PRO (1): Jim Tucker (X)

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Discussion

tschingite Jan 12, 2010:
No doubt, but recite is only one part of the hole islamic prayer called salat or namaz. Я ж не настаиваю на своей версии (см. выше), лишь хочу помочь аскеру зримо представить то, что он переводит.
Yuliya UA Jan 12, 2010:
И все таки они "recite" http://islam.about.com/od/prayer/ht/pray.htm
"Standing with hands folded over chest, recite the first chapter of the Qur'an in Arabic. Then recite any other verses of the Qur'an that you would like".....
tschingite Jan 12, 2010:

They recited many additional prayer services and kept fasts

In addition to these three daily services, a fourth additional prayer service (called mussaf, "additional"), is added on Shabbat and major holidays. A fifth prayer service (ne'ilah) is only recited on Yom Kippur.

Или же " they said many additional prayers and kept fasts", если совершались одним человеком

"a number of fasts", as "additional" refers to both prayer services and fasts.

Кстати, вот нашла пару ссылок, где говориться что both prayers and fasts can be DONE

Why Do Muslims Fast? http://www.sunnah.org/ibadaat/fasting/fast.html
This article has discussed some reasons why Muslims DO Ramadan fast. It is not intended to delve into the subject of fasting but to help Muslims answer...
http://islam.about.com/od/prayer/ht/pray.htm
There are five daily prayer timings. Formal prayers can be DONE during a window of time between the start of one prayer and the start of the following prayer.

В таком случае можно и так: "They did many/ a number of additional prayers and fasts"
Peer comment(s):

agree David Knowles : I'd prefer "recited many additional prayers", and "kept" is just right. It needs two verbs in English.

Thank you, David.
agree Judith Hehir : with David, though you also might use "observed...fasts"

Thank you, Judith.

They made numerous additional prayers and fasts

I prefer the expression "observe a fast" but it gets rather "wordy" and repetitive to say "..and observed numerous additional fasts". I'm assuming here that the adjectives apply to both the prayers and fasts

they ministered some additional non-mandatory prayers and fasts

- in case it conserns islam

They performed many additional prayers and fasts

you perform rituals--this word can be used with both prayers and fasting, especially if they are of a more ritual-type than reciting prayers. Also, it is a direct translation of исполнить.
