"Ahead running" vs. "Running ahead" - not the same "Ahead running" can be used in a marine context, though "forward running" is evidently more common. It's a BAD IDEA to convert it to "running ahead," which would change the meaning to suggest the engines were running faster than some other process. You could adjust it to "in forward-running mode", or I suppose the other suggestions, viz. "forward gear" would work since it's talking about engines.

Thank you, Misha. "Ahead running" is puzzling to me too. Apparently, some people are content to treat Multitran as the Bible :)
