"Gypsy" is not at all taken from the text here. It could also be interpreted incorrectly, calling for offense. Plus, we just wouldn't say it that way in English. One could also say "part-time" taxi driver. Maybe even a "backup" or "reserve" taxi driver.

: Offensive or not, everyone in NYC knows what a gypsy cab is. I am afraid your "taxi driver" misses the point: the guy is not a taxi driver, he uses his service car behind his boss' back to make an extra buck
