I used to work 12-16 hours per day. Now my maximum daily work hours are 12. Quality translation is what counts. It's best to regulate sleep no matter what reason you might think of. Not even the global financial crisis counts, as sleep deprivation leads to heaps of medical problems like heart disease, fainting fits, etc. and it disturbs your circadian rhythm. It does happen that I need to postpone my sleep for a few hours or even till the following day. It usually happens when a customer needs a translation or editing job done by - let's say - 3 p. m., but lives on GMT + 12 hours. These are the moments when...the day is dawning and the translator is yawning. Happy Sunday to all ProZians.

Yes, I do sometimes find myself working into the small hours to finish something on time or to squeeze in another job I really should have said no to... However, there's no way I'd ever get up early to work - I'm just not wired that way! I often feel I work better late at night - there are fewer interruptions from 'phone or e-mails and I actually feel awake at the time. I know if I do it too many nights on the run it starts to affect my health (skin, digestion, etc.), so I do try hard not to do ... No longer in terms of quantity, but sometimes, when I get very (too much?) involved in the subject of a translation, I "live" with it day and night and the quality of my sleep may be affected. | | | Tim Drayton Cyprus Local time: 01:27 Turkish to English + ...
The reason being that I drink a lot of tea to stop my concentration flagging when I have a heavy work load, and this stops me from sleeping at night.

... but like Claire, I sometimes work late into the night. And am hopeless at getting up early. More often, though, I just watch less TV and go to bed at the normal time if deadlines are piling up. As a friend and colleague in an earlier job once put it: I can't drink coffee when I'm asleep. It's not a problem. But if I overdo the lack of sleep, I get migraines, and I am quite good at avoiding them otherwise. Although with medication I barely know I have migraine, I am not fit to work - I make stupid mistakes and even more typing errors than usual - and I don't see them when proodfreading. It is never worth it, but it happens now and then... It's called earning a living, so don't forget to live! ▲ Collapse | | | inkweaver Germany Local time: 00:27 French to German + ...
I never work late in the evening or at night. I do tend to sleep little (5-6 hours) but that's got nothing to do with my work, it has just become a habit I think. I like to start work early and take a longish break and do some more work in the afternoon, but never after 8pm. After a certain number of hours of work I just can't concentrate any more and since I attach great importance to quality I have to stop working before the quality of my work deteriorates. Inkweaver, I could have written the same post. I've been sleeping better lately (waking up at least after 5 am) because I'm taking a valerian root concoction at bedtime; but in terms of working late, I can only manage it in an emergency, because I'm one of those morning people everyone hates

I usually don't work late "willingly", i.e. I usually do not take jobs where I know beforehand that I have to work late. However, there are times when I under estimate the workload, something takes longer than I think because of formatting or errors or some text that proves more complicated on second sight. I am one of the late birds though (like most translators it seems), I simply to not function before 8.30am.

No social organization should ever allow this to happen in a civilized country. No employer would be allowed to do this to his workforce.
