Just curious... Dec 3, 2006

But if someone were to lie about something like that, why wouldn't they lie when answering the poll?
In other words, what's the point of this poll in the first place?
Catherine

The only temptation would be to keep it a secret Dec 3, 2006

For a start I don't work in a team so I ticked N/A.
And I don't really know what you mean by a specialist team.

I am supported by a specialist team, via Kudoz. Is that what you mean?

I assume this is not relevant to work from agencies Dec 3, 2006

Agencies do not even acknowledge that we have our own businesses, but consider us to be individual members of their team. Proz.com is their database of "employees".

Lying to clients? Never. Dec 3, 2006

I voted for "never" as we think that a fair attitude towards our clients is the best way in the long run. We rather turn down a job if we don't have any specialist in a certain fields. Professional clients appreciate us being honest rather than just take any job.

@Astrid:
Apparently you know "all" agencies? Strange to see how you can generalize. We understand our suppliers as part of our team and independent businesses. They are not our employees and we're not their employer.

Erik

Like Mark, I checked N/A.

I don't lie, I let everyone know I'm a solo practitioner, an "Army of One", which does not work in the military or in many other areas, but it does work in translation. Many of us work like that, and we should be proud of it.

If I were ever on a team, in soccer I would be the goalie, and in American football, the place kicker. That is where the individual effort stands out.

Lie and Team Dec 4, 2006

Lie: never, because I do not want somebody else to lie to me either. Mutual trust is an absolute prerequisite for a good work relationship between a freelance translator and his/her client.

Team: N/A, because I do not work in team.

Those who lie will obviously not express their opinions here Dec 4, 2006

Many people lie about this, just as many people lie about experience, studies, etc. I personally find it ridiculous to lie about particular specialist teams (I assume you mean professionals in a certain field whom you can phone when you have terminology questions related to their filed of expertise). If I was an outsourcer (I am not), I would skip this kind of information. It's only as good as saying that you have tons of dictionaries - which is no guarantee of a good job. If I was an outsourcer (I am not), I would skip this kind of information. It's only as good as saying that you have tons of dictionaries - which is no guarantee of a good job. So, I find it pathetic when people lie about this - and they do, a whole lot.

Do I have a specialist team supporting me? I do. I have lots of colleagues who are better at certain subjects than I am. I have acquaintances working day jobs in different fields with whom I occasionally discuss terminology questions. Do I mention it? No. I don't think it will help me win a job. I'm just happy they are around and can give me a hand when I'm stuck. They are my secret weapon - read my lips: secret weapon.

No. Dec 4, 2006

No. Lying backfires. If translators working on the project, armed with tons of dictionaries and the net can not find the right term, you may be darn sure the outsourcer will ask for the specialist and even pay for his/her terminology.

I have a specialist team, most of them are not a translator, but they can give me help in professional term used in the field I am working.
