Spanish to English Medical Medical (general) Cholestorol and statins

Not sure about "individuos" in this particular sentence. Are they talking about human individuals or individual alleles? Thoughts?

TIA, Juliette

individuals

It means people (or in theory other organisms) who have this genetic characteristic. "Individuos" as a noun must means that.

"Homocigoto se refiere a la composición genética de una característica específica en un organismo diploide. Cada alelo de un gen en particular se hereda de cada progenitor. Si ambos alelos para ese gen en particular son iguales, entonces el organismo es homocigoto."
https://www.genome.gov/es/genetics-glossary/Homocigoto

"A heterozygote is an individual having two different alleles at a genetic locus; a homozygote is an individual having two copies of the same allele at a locus."
https://www.blackwellpublishing.com/ridley/a-z/Heterozygote_...

You could call them homozygous individuals (, or indeed homozygotic individuals, and you even find homozygote individuals.

"Individuals have two copies of genes on the autosomes (and in females on the X chromosomes), in homozygous individuals (homozygotes) both copies of the allele are identical. Homozygous individuals will always pass their allele onto any children."

I highlighted the wrong phrase in the second reference, but the principle is the same.

The word "homozygote" can't be applied to alleles, but only to organisms.

agree YESHWANT UMRALKAR : notwithstanding the rather detailed explanation, grammatically it is pretty much obvious that the attributes "homocigotos o dobles heterocigotos" qualify the noun individuos, hence individuals

Thanks! Yes, I agree; it's essentially a grammatical point. The rest is just background.

agree liz askew : Indeed. Pretty straightforward.

Thanks, Liz :-)
agree José Patrício : The main difference between homozygous and heterozygous is that homozygous individuals carry two identical alleles whereas heterozygous individuals - https://pediaa.com/difference-between-homozygous-and-heteroz...
