"Up to several hours can be required for the microbes to completely transit the water line drinking system of a livestock-raising facility from the location where the microbe is introduced into the drinking system to the last nipple drinkers on the water line. Since cells have a higher specific density than water, but often have no way of active movement on their own (e.g. flagella and/or sufficient energy to operate them), they settle. If their settling velocity exceeds a certain threshold, none of the cells will arrive at the end of the water line, and only livestock at the beginning of the water line will receive live cells, leading to non-homogenous dosing. Moreover, all cells settling to the bottom of the line will not provide any benefit to the livestock, leading to significant product loss and potential fouling of the water line.".
