Hi everyone,
It took me a little while to find the passage to which I referred in a previous entry. I found it at the beginning of Chapter 33 of _Soul Mountain_ by Gao Xing Jian and offer it below.
In the book Mr. Gao tells a story of a man who was bitten by the Qichun snake while bending over. In order to save his life he amputated a part of his arm so as to prevent the poison from further circulation. So deadly is the snake's poison that if action is not taken immediately the snake bite can be fatal. Although the man survived to tell his story, he was crippled for the rest of his life.
Apparently Mr. Gao was able to see a live Qichun snake in captivity. The passage:
"This is the kingdom of the Qichun snake," he says.
I think it's thanks to the Qichun snakes that this stretch of primeval subtropical forest and undergrowth of _evergreen broadleafs_ has been preserved."
The translation is by Dr. Mabel Lee. She is a Professor of Asian Studies at the University of Syndey. The emphasis is my own.
I sent an autographed copy of the Chinese version of Mr. Gao's book to my Chinese friend in Taipei, and retained the autographed English copy for myself. How I got the autographs is a very long story, but it is closely related to my experience at The Chinese University of Hong Kong and the likelihood of my continued success in Hong Kong, if this is what I might someday be able to call it.
Perhaps someday I will see you in Hong Kong, and I can show you the book. For the moment just think of me as the man with the amputated hand, and let's take a long pause until my severed arm has healed.
Although I have already thanked you in my company's 4th HKLNA-Project newsletter (see URL below), I would like to take a brief moment to thank you again. You have made me painfully aware of the need to correct my many mistakes, and it will likely take me _many, many days_ to repair the damage. Hopefully I might someday be able to return the favor and reenter the forest. Surely enough time has passed that I might now be able to complete the job of self-editing. We are always our worse judge!
Please forgive me for not posting this note on the French and English boards. I will retain my activity on the Japanese, until my arm has healed.

Mich wundert es nicht, daß die deutsche und englische Buchstabierungen der Qichun -Schlange gleich sind. Und ich danke Ihnen für die Bestätigung dieser Tatsache. Dieses Phänomen versteht sich vielleicht dadurch, daß die gleiche Buchstabierung in der chinesischen Sprache auch keine phonetische Bedeutung hat. Diese Beobachtung darf man auch im Bezug auf den meisten in Englisch benannten regionalen Namen Chinas machen.
Vom Pflanzen der Gewürzkräuter in Hubei Provinz hatte ich wenige Ahnung. Sicherlich stimmen sich aber die Erdichtung von Gao Xing Jian mit der wahrhaften geographischen Lage Hubeis.
