In a further exemplary embodiment, high mannose is "trimmed back" to the GIcNAc to which the first mannose is attached. The GIcNAc is conjugated to a Gal residue bearing a PEG moiety. Alternatively, an unmodified Gal is added to the GIcNAc, followed by the addition of a sialic acid modified with a water-soluble sugar. In yet a further example, the terminal GIcNAc is conjugated with Gal and the GIcNAc is subsequently fucosylated with a modified fucose bearing a PEG moiety.
