Как первое, так и последнее обозначает “дорогие игрушки“, такие “орнаменты“, как, например, мощные мотоциклы, спортивные машины, дорогая одежда и пр. Ну как в "the difference between men and boys is the size and price of their toys" :)))

Ksenia, I have just re-read the whole passage and got a pang of a strong doubt!!! The passage is about the Vietnam wor, and how all the lower-class youngsters end up in the military while the middle-class "kids with beads" get off scot-free. At the time, the rich kids from the suburbs were mostly "peaceniks" unti-war, "alternative culture" weed-smoking flower-power... etc. In brief, Bob Dylan, Woodstock and the like. You know, long hair, bracelets and.... yes.... beads. In that context it would be literally “ребятки с бусами“ или даже просто “хиппи из зажиточных предместий“. Посмотрите побольше в контексте: может быт именно это, а не предложенный мной вариант; а ведь нету тяжелее греха, чем ввести коллегу в заблуждение!!!!!

Так я именно про это и говорю! Антимилитаристы. Богатенькие молодые увешанные бусами цветочки-антиэстеблишмент, украшенные татуировками и увешанные бусами и пр. Они все и были из богатых семей.
