assurance maladie / mutuelle complémentaire

Health insurance
The sentence: "Le travailleur bénéficiera d’une assurance maladie prise en charge par l’employeur, ainsi que d’une mutuelle complémentaire." I had begun with "health insurance", but this seems to me a bit too complicated to be covered by that, and I'm not at all familiar with the system.

I don\'t see how \"l\'assurance maladie prise en charge par l\'employeur\" could be the social security insurance, since employees also contribute to it. Is this in France?

Comment: "Thanks! Reading was correct and gave me the clue, though it wasn't a straight hit. This is a special contract for expats. The company HAS TO PAY SS, but in addition, will provide private MEDICAL INSURANCE AND SUPPLEMENTARY HEALTH INSURANCE, since subject is working in Africa."

private health cover

state sickness benefits and complementary private insurance
what happens is that you HAVE to subscribe to the "social security" (sécurité sociale) scheme if you are officially employed. This only reimburses you part of your medical expenses. On top of that, many companies offer their staff a more or less voluntary top up scheme. "Mutuelle" refers to the fact that these schemes are usually managed by private mutual insurance companies. The nearest UK equivalent would be BUPA ........ These complementary schemes are usually mandatory for management categories...

: I believe both plans are in addition to social security: one is non-contributory and the other (the "mutual" insurance) is contributory.

don't agree - assurance maladie is the same thing as "sécurité sociale"

: yes, assurance maladie is the state scheme in France but that usually doesn't cover the whole costs for employees and mutuelle the private top-up

supplementary coverage
In addition to the compulsory primary health insurance. In this context, coverage suffices since it is obviously within the context of insurance.

complementary health policy
"The employee will have the benefit of health insurance provided by the employer as well as a complementary health policy".
As far as I remember, an employer can pay for private health but is also obliged to pay into the State system (in France). The State will reimburse 75% of medical expenses to the employee and the remaining 25% will be paid by a (voluntary) extra policy. This ensures 100% cover. Usually the complementary policy has to be paid by the employee so if I have it right, this is a good deal!
