whole quote

German to English Art/Literary Art, Arts & Crafts, Painting
"Das bleibt nicht im Photo, das bleibt nur Erinnerung von dem, der wirklich darin stand."
A quote from the artist Blinky Palermo, who specialised in minimalist wall paintings. What he meant is that a photo is lacking the "live" element. It's clear enough - but what do I write in English? The first "bleibt" and the "darin" are my Problemzonen here.

Discussion

Kieran McCann Jan 12, 2005:
Hmm...
Non-ProZ.com Jan 12, 2005:
Kieran that's the quote as it stands.
Non-ProZ.com Jan 12, 2005:
He's talking about his Rauminstallationen, by the way.
The quote is followed in my text by the following words from the author:
"Die Rezeption der Arbeit war, folgt man diesem Zitat, also nur im Raum mglich, solange die Arbeit Bestand hatte."

caputured/there

"It's not captured by the photo, it's only captured in the memory of the person who was actually (standing) there." I'm assuming "darin" refers to the space in general. Without additional context it's difficult to know if a more specific location was meant.

oops, \"caputured\" should be \"captured\"
Peer comment(s):

agree MMUlr : I like this one, esp. "... the person who was actually there" - as the person had not been photographed, but only keeps the memory of the place, or whatever.

agree BrigitteHilgner : That's how I understand the text, too.

neutral Textklick : It would have helped had Blinky thrown in an "als" or an "in", methinks

agree Kirsten Schulze : It won't be in the photo, it will only be in the memory of those who were actually there (Einfügen von "als" oder "in" wäre hier übrigens nicht sinnvoll, da es die Bedeutung verändern würde)

"It is not present in the photograph, it is only present as a memory of the one being photographed."

maybe something along these lines?

It's not an image as such, it's only a reminder of who the image actually represents

(Dunno)

You get some weird stuff in Ballin, right? ;-)

that's no longer present in a/the photograph, it's only present in the/as a memory of someone who was actually there

I read 'darin' as 'im Raum'...plus, would it be heretical to ask whether 'in der' is missing before 'Erinnerung'?
