Schlaghölzchen

Jedes Kind holt ein Schlaghölzchen und stellt es auf. Mit 2 bis 4 Verschränkstäbchen legt es ein Stern auf das Schlaghölzchen. Wiederum tanzen die Kinder zur Musik um die Sterne. Sobald die Melodie zuende ist, setzen sie sich wieder zu ihrem Stern hin.

At first I was thinking it was a 'clave', you know the little sticks you use in music class to beat out a rhythm? I can't see how that could work in this game; they tend to be small and rounded.

I think your suggestion "clave" is correct. They are wooden round tone sticks invented by Carl Orf, also available in bigger sizes (see link below). According to the instruction above, they are placed upright, and the sticks are placed in the shape of a star on the top flat surface. This should be technically possible, depending on the thickness of the tone stick.
