German term

atomare Bindungsstruktur

German to English Science Chemistry; Chem Sci/Eng Dental Ceramics
"Keramik ist kein Metall

"Das grundsätzlich so unterschiedliche Verhalten der Keramiken im Vergleich zu metallischen Werkstoffen beruht auf der atomaren Bindungsstruktur."

From a text about dental ceramics and materials science principles. My first thought for "atomare Bindungsstruktur" was "atomic binding structure", but this only gets two hits, which makes it extremely unlikely to be a recognised English scientific term. "Atomic bonding structure" gets a few more hits, but nothing really convincing. The dictionaries are most unhelpful on the term "Bindungsstruktur".

Do any of the scientists here know what exactly "atomare Bindungsstruktur" might properly be called in English? TIA for your help.

atomic bonding

There are several types of atomic and molecular bonds. But they are all called bonds. That's what I would use here.

Don\'t let the \"-struktur\" put you off, I think it\'s just \"Geschwafel-Deutsch\"

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks Alan. Atomic bonding should work OK. The "-struktur" part does seem a bit redundant, and certainly doesn't seem to be used in English. One of those instances of German over-precision, it would seem. Thanks again - appreciate your help."
