German term

Es gilt das gesprochene Wort

German to English Bus/Financial General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters
This appears in a speech. Is there a general translation for it or can one just say "The spoken word is final"?

TIA,

Antje

[only] the spoken word prevails (!)

The German statement often appears on hardcopies of speeches (e.g. drafts, hand-outs). It enables the speaker to be in control of the speech -- and accountable for what's said -- at the time it is given, and removes any doubt as to which version is the one that counts.

"The spoken word is binding".

This would be so in the case of a spoken agreement (contract). It means the spoken word implies a compromise.

Verbal agreement prevails.

This may not be a literal translation, but in a speech I think this phrase might be more appropriate.
