Not happy with "acquisition of office"....what about "appointment to the office"? Or any better ideas?

Assuming this really is the UK House of Commons (as specified above):
I agree with you that it would be unseemly for any candidate to ‘acquire’ this office. The successful candidate is ‘elected’ by fellow MPs, not ‘appointed’ (e.g. by the Queen)
