German term

Schaustellfarce

German to English Art/Literary Idioms / Maxims / Sayings
I would be grateful for assistance with the precise meaning of this term in the following context. This is a 20th-century Austrian artist talking about his life as a hill farmer and the effect it has on his work:

Sie wissen, daß ich nach Großstadtjugend, Werkarbeit und Studium nun seit 30 Jahren ein Bergbauernanwesen mit meiner Familie in der Einschicht bearbeitete. Mit Romantizismus hat das nicht das geringste zu tun, und wer solche Lebensform diese Zeit hindurch erprobt und bestanden hat, weiß, daß es keine härtere, unsentimentalere Realität gibt als das Landleben ohne Schaustellfarce.

Discussion

Helen Shiner (asker) Oct 26, 2009:
Hello Kerstin Thanks for your explanation. I was wondering whether 'living on the land without pretence' would do.
Kerstin Green Oct 26, 2009:
Fairground caricature ?? I can't come up with a really good translation, so here's just an explanation how I understand the term in this context. Schausteller is "fairground", and farce here would be like a caricature. It means that the farming life is nothing like the romantic images often portrayed in shows etc.

(working the land) without show or pretence

...is another suggestion. He's expressing some disdain maybe for "hobby farmers" or those who dabble in agriculture without having to depend on it.
Note from asker:
I like the addition of 'show'. Will go with this. Thanks, Clive.

(showman's) fake

compound noun

Schaustell- in the sense of "Schausteller" - fairground entertainer or showman

-farce = the same as in English - a term derived from literature/theater

It appears to me that the word refers to unsentimental...he had enough of city life and therefore he became a farmer...farmer's existence without fake

putting on a false public display

My first thought was also pretense, or false pretense. A Schaustellfarce is a spectacle, an exhibition of the rustic life without the real work involved. To capture 'farce' you might want to add the 'false' somewhere. I also had trouble with that tiny word 'ohne' and decided to reword the sentence.

than actually living on the land as opposed to putting on a false public display

Schaustellen – to give an exhibition
Schausteller – showman, exhibitor
Schaustellung – public exhibition

feigned spectacle, display, masquerade, unvarnished, public show

Note from asker:
Perhaps just 'without ridiculous showmanship' would work. I don't think I would want anything too long really

silly posturing

I like Clide's too but "posturing" has more of the jab I feel in "Schaustell-".
to posture: "to adopt (a certain attitude) so as to impress..."(Am.Oxf.Dict.)
Example sentence:

"... their elected officials by their silly posturing...."

Das Wort "Schaustellfarce" höre ich heute zum ersten Mal ... Ich denke dabei aber an Heimatfilme oder -theater. Von Lobhymnen auf die unberührte Natur über deftige Schwänke bis zu Softporno ist mMn alles möglich.
Kim und Clive sind auf dem richtigen Weg. Und wenn du das Ding näher beschreiben willst, dann finde ich "false" oder "fake" treffender als "ridiculous".
Note from asker:
Don't worry, ridiculous is out of the window - Clive's proposal brings the two elements together in an understated way which matches the tone of the text.
