German term

"Problematisch wird's erst hinterm Holz...

German to English Other Idioms / Maxims / Sayings Hunter's expression
The full sentence is: Oder, wie der Jäger sagt: Problematisch wird's erst hinterm Holz...
This comes up in a discussion of firearms, in a discussion of how evolvers, always shoot well with the right ammunition. Or, as the hunter says: ""Problematisch wird's erst hinterm Holz..."

Any ideas on this one? I've looked through all the idioms or expressions I could find,
but this one never came up.
Thanks,
Mary

Thanks - this helps. All responses get at the same idea, but Kim's was
first.

more context Revolver, und dazu bedarf es weder besonders langer Läufe noch kostspie¬liger Extras, schießen mit der passen¬den Munition immer gut. Oder, wie der Jäger sagt: *Problematisch wird's erst hinterm Holz...* Noch präziser wird es, wenn sich der Schütze auch mit der Ladepresse beschäftigt und die Munition auf die Waffe perfekt abstimmt.

Please could you give us several sentences of German context rather than an English paraphrase. Thanks.

Most rifles shoot better than the man behind the trigger

Literally, "it doesn't get difficult until you're behind the gun", I think. But since you're looking for an idiomatic phrase, I'd go with the suggestion above.

Zur Qual der Wahl bei der Waffenwahl:
Als Anfänger und ahnungsloses Greenhorn weiß man nicht, was man kaufen soll von dem vielen Tand auf dem Markt. Ich habe den Rat meiner Schützenkameraden befolgt und mir gleich zu Beginn eine Bristlen Morges von Pedersoli zugelegt – keine schlechte Wahl, denn damit lassen sich Ergebnisse schießen die weit besser sind, als der hinter dem Holz das kann.

Both rifles will be very accurate and will for the most part shoot better than the man behind the trigger, however the Kimber will have better fit and finish than the Remington, it is kind of the differance of buying a Lexus over a Toyota, the Toyota will do everything that the Lexus will, but you feel better driving the Lexus

I will be heading to Texas on a hog hunt this Septemeber! I have eight rifles ranging from Marlin 981T in .22 up to the CZ 550 American Safari Classic Magnum in .458 Lott, but my favorite gun is my Weatherby in .270 Win that I had a Timney trigger installed. It has a Leupold VXII 3 x 9 and it is a shooter. It shoots far better than the man behind the gun.

The recurring theme does seem to be that they're all great shooters, most definitely better than the man behind the sights.

I should say literally, "it doesn't get difficult until you're behind the stock". I think the Holz is the rifle stock.

"put more wood behind fewer arrows"

Hi, I had about the same problem with this phrase some months ago but on a different context and I started to search on the Internet and found this post on a forum:

"When deer hunting ..

Real men bring only one arrow. They know how to aim (and they remember to take plenty of time when aiming), and they put all the wood behind that one arrow.

If you're really good you know how to make the maximum utilization of the available resources, be it one arrow or more.

So on to the current phrase, the core motive for "more wood behind fewer arrows" is focus.

It means focus on the priorities, be good at those priorities and remove the non-priorities."

I hope it helps you. It helped me to understand the term and to rephrase.

The problem is not the gun, but the man pulling the trigger

Somewhat more idiomatic. Actually it's very close to a quote from a John Wayne film, "True Grit".
