Really has two connected definitions: 1. poems possibly intended for performance; 2. melodies without text, probably performed on instruments, therefore possibly the oldest surviving purely instrumental compositions from western Europe. Dating from the end of the 13th century and found all through the 14th and the 15th century. The word Istampien doesn't appear anywhere; the Italien form is Istampita. I suspect this is a Germanization...
