German term

Empfindungsgröße

levels of sensitivity

'Klangfarbe' is the basis of orchestrating - particularly where the differences in sound between instruments of the same 'family' are concerned. To use as a constant the note C below the staff. This note will SOUND very different when played by a trumpet, clarinet or piano. Each of these instruments produce a distinctive 'Klangfarbe'. However, should a trumpet, trombone and flugelhorn each play the note, it needs a very sensitive ear to determine which instrument has produced it. Their 'Klangfarbe' can be extremely similar - but there is a difference, if one knows what to listen for! This factor is often used to set the "mood" for a piece e.g. start mellow on flugelhorn - finish brash on a trumpet!
