And I can't seem to find the word in English that fits with my feel for Färbung in this case. I feel like it's on the tip of my tongue, so to speak - just out of reach.

See discussion point: my definition would be that affective tone is more subtle and fleeting than the broader overall affect eg the overall affect in a 1 hour treatment session may be jovial, but periodic alterations in affective tone hint at a mixed mood
