German term
Boden-Kontaktschwelle
German to English
Tech/Engineering
construction, Sensorik
This is an item on a list in a Swiss residential building specification.
From the context, I guess it's a floor switch for opening and/or closing an automatic garage door. I imagine it's the same (piezoelectric?) technology sometimes used at road intersections to trigger the traffic light change sequence.
Personally, I'm only familiar with photoelectric cell detection systems for this application, but the prefix "Boden-" tends to rule that out. I guess it's just another case of the Swiss doing things a little differently.
Assuming I'm on the right track, what I need is the English term for this system. (Floor switch? Floor sensor? Floor sensor mat?)
Assuming I'm on a Holzweg, please set me straight.

ground contact sensor
According to the website of Bircher, it is a ground contact sensor; see below the links of both the German and English pages; check page 5 of the pdf.file for a more detailed description.

Comment: "Thanks to both you and D+D: You're both "right" in the sense that you both turned up translations that are published on the internet (by suppliers trying to sell into non-germanophone markets).
Strictly based on personal preference (gut feel), I like the sensor just a little better than the rail.
(Incidentally, I learned something else from the websites: The priciple not piezoelectric, but rather more like plain old air pressure forced out the end of an enclosed tube and sensed by a pressure sensor.)"
