Vorsteuerabzugsberechtigt ist man, wenn man umsatzsteuerpflichtig ist. Man muss auf seine Einnahmen Umsatzsteuer berechnen und abführen, darf gezahlte Vorsteuer aber abziehen. Die Differenz ist dann die Umsatzsteuerzahllast oder Erstattung.
Achtung: Nicht jeder Unternehmer ist vorsteuerabzugsberechtigt. Wenn jemand steuerfreie Umsätze hat (z. B. Versicherungsvertreter), oder wenn er zur Kleinunternehmerregelung optiert hat, muss man keine USt zahlen, darf aber auch keine Vorsteuer ziehen.
