Spanish term

huevo sin estrellar

Spanish to English Other Cooking / Culinary Restaurant menu
The dish is called: Patata trufada y huevo de corral sin estrellar. Huevos estrellados are fried eggs with the yolk broken, so I imagine this would be simply a fried farm egg. Any other suggestions?

Margarita Osborn Belt (X) (asker) Jun 18, 2008:
Thank you all very much for your suggestions. It was not easy! In the end, I decided to ask my client to call the cook and find out what he or she meant. The answer was "una yema apenas cocida de huevo ecológico, encima de una patata" so in the end my translation was "Truffled potato topped with a lightly poached organic egg yolk". I'll answer you individually as well. ¡Muchas gracias!

Note from asker:
Sunny side up seemed very reasonable and I was about to use it but decided to call the cook to make sure. In the end, he meant an organic, slightly poached egg yolk. Thanks for helping!
Peer comment(s):

neutral Kate Major Patience : I turn my eggs sometimes, in order to cook the remaining white, but that does not mean I break the yolk. Sunny side up eggs means, as you say, not turned over... As you rightly comment, one might like easy-over and whole yolk, but it's not easy! :)

a raw egg?

Hi Margaret.
I'm really just guessing here as I'm not familiar with this particular dish and you haven't posted the recipe. I suspect it MIGHT just simply be a simple raw fresh egg, cracked and poured over or mixed with the potatoes etc.

When you eventually find out..please send me the recipe. I enjoy cooking:-)
Luck:-)
Note from asker:
Sorry, Terry, there was no recipe, just the menu. In the end the correct translation was "Truffled potato topped with a lightly poached organic egg yolk"

fried farm egg

Yo estoy deacuerdo con lo que propones :)
Un "fried egg" es un huevo frito y se supone que si está bien hecho no debe estar rota la yema ¿no?
Note from asker:
Hola Paula. Al final llamé al cliente y me dijo lo que era, así que lo traduje como "Truffled potato topped with a lightly poached organic egg yolk".
Peer comment(s):

agree Kate Major Patience : Yes, it could simply be put like this. But I'd use 'free-range', not 'farm' in order to distinguish from battery eggs.

(fried) egg with unbroken yolk

or "whole yolk"

from what you say, it's simply this. No special term, as far as I know...

But BEWARE of using "unbroken egg", which of course means still in the shell

Some people actually prefer their egg yolks broken and set right through, but I have to confess to liking my yolks whole and runny, with the whites just set!
Note from asker:
Yes, I know it would be with the shell, but thanks for the warning! In the end, I called the cook and translated it as "Truffled potato topped with a lightly poached organic egg yolk". Thanks again!

agree Kate Major Patience : Yes. Am I mistaken in thinking that huevo de corral is free-range, then?// As you like, but I think reading the context that it is very much part of the dish, and maybe worth a mention if not in the 'target' box then somewhere. Either way, still agree. :)

yem, thanks Kate! Agree we should eat free-range eggs, although I don't think that's part of the term in this question//I don't think so, but "corral" isn't part of "huevo sin estrellar"// I just assumed that Margarita didn't need that bit explained :)
