English term

retro

English to Spanish Bus/Financial Business/Commerce (general) sales negotiations
I have a transcript from a recording taken from a negotiation between a seller C2 (manufacturer/distributor of soft drinks) and a buyer C1 (chain of pubs and restaurants) in the UK.

The term "retro" seems to mean discount or rebate applicable (retrospectively?) to a certain volume of business/orders. However, it is the first time that I have seen this term used in this way and I cannot find much in terms of relevant references for "retro" in English. I am thinking "descuento retroactivo" for Spanish; am I right? I would appreciate the help from colleagues on this. Many thanks in advance.

DIALOGUE ("retro" in upper case for visual effect only in the text below)

C 1: In real terms that means?
_______________________

C 2: You have the opportunity of moving our volumes up again given the margins you're maintaining and the price point and everything else. My suggestion in this, to complete the picture, the opportunity to meet your needs is to look at where we are in terms of current volume. 250,000 cases I’m predicting to you now if we make these sorts of changes. We can move this, not least with acquisition to help move to 300,000 cases. Not all incremental to me potentially. As I said we are already in these 200 bars. What I’ll actually do to support the growth potential with a payment of your RETRO for the volume growth above that 25,000 cases. I would suggest is what I’ll do is move the £1 RETRO to £1.25 on all those cases of incremental growth to generate you better margins to meet your needs.
________________________

C 1: What I was in for, was to buy a case at £12.15.
________________________

C 2: O.K.
____________________

C 1: That’s where we are looking to get to from £13.15.
____________________

C 2: And what are the specific drivers. The “invoiced price” or after RETRO. What makes the difference to you?
____________________

C 1: It’s the pressure I’m under as I told you, from The Board. The margins that we make. So effectively your offering me 25p (pence) more.
____________________

C 2: Absolutely. On incremental volume above 250,000 cases. For volume that I know is delivering the cash margins through your tills.
____________________

C 1: And I’m asking for 65p.
____________________

C 2: And I’m really not going to be able to move in terms of invoice price.
____________________

C 1: O.K.
____________________

C 2: I still want to try and find a way to meet that need of your margin requirement but do it in a way that structures a value for both parties in this. To give you 50 or 65p whatever it is on the invoice price, has no obvious benefit to me other than you would like to kick out Drink D and give me 100% in all your restaurants’ and all the activity behind it. I we can talk about that sort of opportunity, may be there is something we can do and look at. Realistically, strategically I want to find a way that fits. I don’t want Drink B overkill either, to be perfectly honest. I want to fit in and not just go around blasting people out of the water.

O.K. we’ve covered a fare bit of ground. Looking at the time, lets put some next steps into a plan here. First of all, what is it you need to see from me following this meeting? What are the three key things?
_____________________

C 1: O.K. There’s three things. I want my £12.15 price. You’ve talked about the possibility of that happening if I knock out everything else. I understand it’s a possibility. So what I’d like you to do is to work that out and come back to me with what that could involve.

The second thing is, regards to the RETRO price you’ve offered me of £1.25. I want to know what your best price is. We’ve got a meeting in a months time when we are going to make a decision. I’d like you to be part of that decision. So come back with your best price at that time.

The third part is the activity. I want to see what the ideas are for next Summer in terms of promotion getting basically volumes through the three areas. High Street is sorted but I want to see what your active plans for the other three areas are.
______________________

C 2: O.K. No problem at all. Certainly I didn’t come in here as I explained, of clearing other people out of the mix. The likes of Drink D or whatever. But if we want to go down that avenue, I’m more than willing to look at that.

If I was to come back and say 65p lower price point of £12.15 I think you said. Then at £12.15 would you kick everyone out?

Montse beat me to it. Retro is an acronym for retroactive.

retroactivo

Carlos, creo simplemente sería "retroactivo", sin "descuento". En todo caso, de los ejemplos que citas, se habla de "precio retroactivo".

Según The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language

Retro = Retroactive.

Por ejemplo: retro pay.

Según WordNet 3.0, Farlex clipart collection. © 2003-2008 Princeton University, Farlex Inc.

1. retro - affecting things past; "retroactive tax increase"; "an ex-post-facto law"; "retro pay"

(con efectos) retroactivos

I saw this not so long ago as a short for "retroactive pay(s)/wages". It can be understood as well as retroactive wages. It is used as a noun, you may choose the noun it refers to and so add "(con efectos) retroactivos", as Alcaraz Varo's dictionary suggests.

"Retro"

Hi Carlos: I admit I'm going out on a limb on this one, and I may be completely off, but I remember that one of the major cola soft drink brands came out with a version called "Retro" and they had special packaging, presentation, publicity and so forth; could this possibly fit into your context?

OKAY, Carlos: Gracias por informarme; Saludos. :))
Note from asker:
Gracias, Eski, pero en este caso no tiene que ver con una apariencia o un sabor retro. Gracias de todos modos.
