"carried forward" is the correct term - losses can also be carried back and in the US tax system losses are first carried back, unless this provision is waived.

Use in 2008 of the tax loss carry-forward

.. generated a tax credit .

After a loss in previous years they recorded a profit this year, which can be partly offset by the loss carried forward when calculating tax, so that tax payments during the year were higher than necessary, leading to a tax credit for the overpayment. Hope this is clear!
