Slovak term

neurologicky orientačne v norme

Slovak to English Medical Medical (general)
OBJEKTÍVNE VYŠETRENIE
.... poloha aktívna, neurologicky orientačne v norme.

neurologicky orientačne:
perhaps the words are usually the other way round: orientačne neurologicky.

Is there a set phrase for this in English?

Discussion

Maria Chmelarova May 17, 2010:
orientačne v norme predbežne (for the time being)
Gerry Vickers May 17, 2010:
Slavo, Maria Sorry - I was wrong - of course it is 'neurologicky' and not 'neurologický'. Please accept my apology.
Slavomir BELIS May 17, 2010:
"orientačne v norme" in this text has nothing to do with "orientácia".

!!!!!!!! pažerák orientačne v norme!!!!!!
Slavomir BELIS May 17, 2010:
That is not my intention. I am just saying that another native has just confirmed to me that it is perfectly OK. But if you say, it is no good, no problem at all.
Gerry Vickers May 17, 2010:
I'm not going to get into an argument about this :)
Slavomir BELIS May 17, 2010:
"around normal" is certainly perfectly OK in English.
Slavomir BELIS May 17, 2010:
Gerry, that is your opinion but you know very well what the Slovak doctors can produce on paper. Basically, a Slovak doctor is able to write - about normal.
Gerry Vickers May 17, 2010:
Honestly - this is standard terminology - as it stands yes, you are right, but Dylan might have missed off the dlžeň, or it is missing from the original :) You wouldn't have 'about normal' on a medical report!
Slavomir BELIS May 17, 2010:
Otherwise, it would not make any sense.
Slavomir BELIS May 17, 2010:
I cannot be sure but I think that "orientačne" means "approximately, about, rougly" in this.
Dylan Edwards (asker) May 17, 2010:
I'm uncertain about how orientačne should be understood here, especially if the normal order of words is 'orientačne neurologicky'.

Yes, I'm taking both words as adverbs, but in the light of what I have found by googling (e.g. "... bol orientačne neurologicky vyšetrený), I wonder if there's a special way of wording this in English.
Maria Chmelarova May 17, 2010:
adv. not adj. if you can make neurological as adv. and not as adj.
It s "neurologicky orientačne" and not "neurologický orientačne"

cursory neurological examination within the norm

or my other suggestion would be "no gross neurological deficit:"
Example sentence:

In an attempt to assess potential adverse effects from the phenytoin, I was in the room, performing a cursory neurological examination.

Note from asker:
Thanks. I was wondering whether this refers to a rough (orientačné)/guideline neurological examination. "Cursory" makes sense here.

agree Gerry Vickers : I agree with this one as well - also possible

OK - in this context then the first bit means what I put, and the second phrase is what Misha says - you might also want to look at this http://www.proz.com/kudoz/german_to_english/medical_general/...
Note from asker:
Thanks. The previous line of text says "pri vedomí, orientovaný ...". I wonder whether the phrase "neurologicky orientačne v norme" adds very much.
Peer comment(s):

disagree Martin Kura : "orientačne" has nothing to do with orientation here, but "approximately". The word order often varies in medical reports in Slovak, as the doctors are not good linguists

yes - I realise that now - this refers to 'pri vedomi - orientovany ...'

Neurological findings grossly intact

This will keep Slavo happy. It means 'about normal', but in more medical terms :)
