Spanish term

necrosis de predominio centrozonal

Spanish to English Medical Medical (general) liver disease - toxic hepatitis
"La biopsia hepática no es necesaria para el diagnóstico, pero la presencia de **necrosis de predominio centrozonal** y ... apoyan la sospecha clínica."

It's really the word "centrozonal" that I need help with. I find it used in a number of references in English, but the ones I look at seem to be translated from other languages or written by non-native English speakers.

Is "centrozonal" an acceptable and correct English translation for the Spanish, or is there another term that is more widely used in English?

Thanks.

Discussion

Joseph Tein (asker) Jun 20, 2010:
Reply to Liz: This is from an article discussing 'Hepatitis tóxica' in a patient who was treated with a series of medications. They don't mention how the necrosis is detected, although it's in a section that discusses whether biopsies are necessary or not for confirming the diagnosis. It makes sense -- from my beginner's perspective -- that one would have to actually go inside the liver to find necrosis.
liz askew Jun 20, 2010:
I see this "centrozonal" bit is based on the doctor's physical examination then, so is he palpating the liver?

predominant zone III/centrilobular necrosis

-Hi, Joseph...
-or "zone 3 necrosis"...
- according to Rappaport' s zonal acinar model/concept...
-would definetely go for zone III/zone 3 and avoid centrizonal... much more clear for all physicians worldwide i think...

Structural and functional liver units
Classic hepatic lobule
central vein forms the center of the classic lobule with portal triads at its periphery blood flows from the periphery to the center of the lobule while bile flows from the center to the periphery of the lobule
Portal lobule
portal triad forms the center of the portal lobule with the central vein at its periphery blood flows from the center to the periphery while bile flows from the periphery to the center
Hepatic acini (zones 1, 2 and 3) of Rappaport
hepatic acinus represents a liver lobule that is divided into 3 regions based on their proximity to the distributing veins
Zone I
cells closest to the vessels (portal triad) and 1st to be affected by incoming blood
Zone II
cells which are 2nd to respond to blood (in between portal triad and central vein)
Zone III
cells near the central vein which see blood that has already been altered by cells in zones I and II

The two-dimensional microarchitecture of the liver can be viewed from multiple different perspectives.
Name / Shape
classical lobule / hexagonal; divided into concentric centrilobular, midzonal, periportal parts
portal lobule / triangular; centered around a portal triad
acinus / elliptical or diamond-shaped; divided into zone I (periportal), zone II (transition zone), and zone III (centrilobular)

Ciao Panagiotis ... una domanda: is "centrilobular" equivalent to "centrizonal"? I found "centrilobular necrosis" much more frequently in my online search, but I didn't know if it means the same thing. Ευχαριστώ!

I do not know whether "centrilobular" and "centrizonal" are synonyms and for that reason I would go for the literal translation of the Spanish source text. i.e. "centrizonal".

Therein lies the dilemma of the medical linguist, rather than a medically-trained linguist!!
